Hello, my names Matt. I joined this group a little while ago but wasn't active because I've been busy. I am interested in attending the next meeting. I am a little bit confused as to where it is. The location says Rock Bottom Bar but theres also a post about a new meeting location at Lambton Tower. Hopefully someone can clear that up for me =) And also, what do I bring? Do I bring a laptop or just come to listen? Also, how long are the meetings usually? I was away for the last two meetings unfortunately. Would there be a possibility of another meeting this month (august) if enough people are interested?
Thanks!
I was just wondering if you guys are still active with the meetings? I have permanently moved down from Toronto to Windsor and I am a FreeBSD and Linux user just looking to get together with some other Unix users and learn and share ideas.

I joined the Facebook group quite some time ago but it seems to be pretty inactive so I though I try here on the official forum :)

It's been decided a few months ago that the WUUG portal would be migrated to Drupal CMS. Since I volunteered to help out with setting up the infrastructure for the migration and the future development of Drupal modules for the site, i'd like to use this thread to get in touch with members who would like to participate in this project.

The very first task, of course, is to install Drupal on its own virtual-host on the server, and start migrating all the news, events, and static content from the current site to the new one so that we don't start up with an empty site.

Of course, we'll also need a selection of Drupal modules to port over some of the features of the current site, such as the forum and the forum to mailing-list gateway.

I'll be working with Alan to set up the infrastructure based on your recommendations, so if you're interested in joining the project, let me know.

I have several SunBlade 1000s with dual 750MHz Sparc III V9 processors (8MB L2 cache), 36GB FC HardDiscs, 1-2GB or RAM, DVDROM drive, 2 graphics cards (either Creator3D Series 3's or Expert3D-lites), a sunPCi co-processor card. I can also include a 20" Sun trinitron CRT monitors.

These systems are ideal for server tasks. Sun gives away a lot of software for free now which will run very well on these systems. They are excellent in multi-threaded applications.

Although I can give these away for free, I would prefer a little bit of cash so that I can supplement their replacements. I have been forced to change our computing platform in our research lab and we can no longer support multiple architectures.

I would appreciate around $100 for the system, and maybe $35 for each monitor but I can certainly go lower. (I currently have them configured to run 2 monitors, but it can drive up to 4 with more video cards).

Please see [sunsolve.sun.com] for more details on the system.

Hey guys, just wanted to say i had a blast at the may 7th meeting! we talked about some interesting ideas reguarding what this group used to do in the past, and i just wanted to see what some of your guys thoughts would be in regards to some ideas/projects.

Some of the topics are obvious, but bear with me, im looking for conversation lol.\

1. Lets get some more people involved if we can! this is a great idea and we should run with it if we can!

2. We should do more seminars and presentations/organized events

3.Possibly do computer workshops (im sure we all i have one or two extra machines sitting around)

4. Do some activities as more of a group/team collaberation focus

What do you guys think? any other ideas? speculations?
Discuss!

Bell's Throttling of Torrents and My Ire (6 replies)

Now that Bell is throttling torrents upstream from the third parties, I find myself searching for a new ISP.

I am currently with Kelcom, and although I adore them, there's just no getting around the fact that throttling blows, and they can't evade it any better than I can without dropping some DSLAM equipment into the central office.

To my knowledge, MNSi is the only local ISP that has such facilities in our area. But the @$%#ers don't offer dry loop.

Cable is looking pretty tempting with its 1MB up, and 16MB down. Especially given that I presently have 650kbps up and 4200kbps down.

Does anyone here have Cogeco? I know Cogeco had a rancid reputation for throttling a couple years back, but I heard some rumors that they've relaxed quite a bit about it recently. I figure this is as they've added new pipes, but also probably to take advantage of the people flooding from Bell now. That is, IF the rumor is true.

Anyone here got Cogeco and care to speak to that?

I'll bring this up with everyone at the meeting tomorrow (for whom Tuesday obviously works), but what does everyone else think about moving it to the first Wednesday of the month starting in April?
Who knows, we might have a better place by then too. :)

Greetings, WUUGsters.

Some of you may know Xavier Spriet, who is a developer/architect at Netmon, Inc. and a frequent contributor to this forum. He's a colleague of mine and when this opportunity came up, we thought it would be great to start with this community of passionate Unix enthusiasts before making a more public effort.

It so happens that we are looking to fill a parental leave vacancy for the position of SUPPORT TECHNICIAN.

If you or someone you know fits some or all of the following description, and lives in the Windsor area, we are looking to replace our support technician while he is off for 35 weeks on parental leave. Possibility of full time work exists at the end of this period if our sales / support volumes warrant additional staff. There will be some overlap on either end of the parental leave for training and knowledge transfer. We expect the gig to start in mid-April.

It's a great opportunity to learn how to work with a professional team of developers who follow a fairly well-developed dev process.

Please get in touch with me via e-mail at doug(at)netmon(dot)ca, with a resume, if you're interested.

Here's the job description.

The hybrid Linux and sci-Fi/fantasy convention Penguicon, which takes place each spring in Detroit, and which a few of us WUUG members attended in its first few years, has turned its volunteer rewards system into a Whuffie economy based on Cory Doctorow's awesome book, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. If you aren't familiar with it, it's kind of a Slashdot-style karma system for a real life economy, and I love the idea.

On that note, is anyone thinking about going this year? Linux-related GoHs and nifty guests include Jono Bacon, Benjamin Mako Hill, Lucy Snyder, Jorge Castro, and Kyle Rankin, Eric S. Raymond, Dr. Peter Salus, and Chris DiBona.

The October meeting of the Windsor UNIX Users Group is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at 7:00 PM, at the current usual place -- the Coffee Exchange downtown. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out, drink some joe or Java or C0FFEE, and talk yoo'niks!

Since we still don't have presentation facilities, I'll just make up a discussion topic for this meeting:

Getting Involved in Free Software Projects

in which (hopefully) various members who have contributed to free/open-source software projects in different ways can talk about what they've done and how they got involved. I'll bring some information pamphlets. We can also discuss, as we have in the past, starting a home-grown WUUG project of some kind.

Of course, general discussion is welcome as always. Hope to see you all there!
