Newbie questions on installing *nix. (7 replies)

Hi,

I'm a web developer in Windsor and up until recently, I thought that Windows would always be my OS of choice. But, after seeing other people struggle, I'm now determined that I'll never go to Vista for my home computers. I have XP right now which is nice, but I want to start learning some flavour of *nix to move to once XP is no longer supported by MS.

Anyway, I've used linux briefly at past jobs and in school, but I might as well be a total newbie. I want to install maybe Ubuntu on my laptop so it can boot into either XP or Ubuntu, so I can start learning about it, and finding software to replace the few Windows-only apps I've been using.

Anyway, I have a couple questions for you guys, if you don't mind helping someone get their feet wet.

- First off, is Ubuntu my best choice? I want something as Windows-User friendly as possible. I'm not very comfortable with doing things at the command-line though I can make due if necessary. Do you have better recommendations? I figured Ubuntu b/c I've heard good things about it... and I think that's what I used at a past job, which was pretty nice.

- Second, will installing it wipe out or interfere with my XP installation? Do I need a separate drive or partition?

- Lastly, how do I go about installing it? I read that I need to burn the install to a CD then boot from the CD to do so. Where do I get it from? Are there places where I can pick up free copies of it locally?

Thanks for any help! You guys might be gaining a new local convert. :)

Regarding Aarons presentation and me wondering if distcc will work with emerge.
The install / config options are part of the gentoo handbook. I now have a gentoo install that compiles emerged packages paralleled on 3 different computers (and one is a 64bit box).
Seeing on how my gentoo box is a low-mhz box, this configuration emerges my packages really fast!

I have some equipment on the plant floor that outputs to a printer (DB25), and I want to put an old Pentium I (66Mhz, 32MB ram + 3com NIC) running linux to intercept the output and push it to a server over the network.

What distro is recommended for such an old system?

I tried Ubuntu server (headless), but the installer required too much RAM.

I tried Debian Etch - floppy install, but installer hangs when fetching large packages over network.

Am I stuck with older distros? Or is there a modern distro, targeting headless installs on old hardware for single purpose applications (like serial port capture)?

Gentoo would take way too long... :(

Thanks,
