Some of the topics are obvious, but bear with me, im looking for conversation lol.\

1. Lets get some more people involved if we can! this is a great idea and we should run with it if we can!

2. We should do more seminars and presentations/organized events

3.Possibly do computer workshops (im sure we all i have one or two extra machines sitting around)

4. Do some activities as more of a group/team collaberation focus

What do you guys think? any other ideas? speculations?

Now that Bell is throttling torrents upstream from the third parties, I find myself searching for a new ISP.

I am currently with Kelcom, and although I adore them, there's just no getting around the fact that throttling blows, and they can't evade it any better than I can without dropping some DSLAM equipment into the central office.

To my knowledge, MNSi is the only local ISP that has such facilities in our area. But the @$%#ers don't offer dry loop.

Cable is looking pretty tempting with its 1MB up, and 16MB down. Especially given that I presently have 650kbps up and 4200kbps down.

Does anyone here have Cogeco? I know Cogeco had a rancid reputation for throttling a couple years back, but I heard some rumors that they've relaxed quite a bit about it recently. I figure this is as they've added new pipes, but also probably to take advantage of the people flooding from Bell now. That is, IF the rumor is true.

Anyone here got Cogeco and care to speak to that?

Greetings, WUUGsters.

Some of you may know Xavier Spriet, who is a developer/architect at Netmon, Inc. and a frequent contributor to this forum. He's a colleague of mine and when this opportunity came up, we thought it would be great to start with this community of passionate Unix enthusiasts before making a more public effort.

It so happens that we are looking to fill a parental leave vacancy for the position of SUPPORT TECHNICIAN.

If you or someone you know fits some or all of the following description, and lives in the Windsor area, we are looking to replace our support technician while he is off for 35 weeks on parental leave. Possibility of full time work exists at the end of this period if our sales / support volumes warrant additional staff. There will be some overlap on either end of the parental leave for training and knowledge transfer. We expect the gig to start in mid-April.

It's a great opportunity to learn how to work with a professional team of developers who follow a fairly well-developed dev process.

Please get in touch with me via e-mail at doug(at)netmon(dot)ca, with a resume, if you're interested.

Here's the job description.

---snip---

Support Technician Job Description

Tasks

In recent years, I frequently see people commenting that the standalone window manager paradigm is dead and that integrated desktop environments like Gnome, KDE, XFCE, et al are where it's at.

I'm just curious if anyone else out there still prefers a more basic approach. I originally got familiar with Open Look on Sun machines, and I haven't felt the need for much more. I've been using Blackbox standalone for years, doing most stuff in terminal windows (vanilla xterm). Recently, I installed ROX to use as a standalone filer as well. I find this setup very productive, particularly since it doesn't hide my system behind abstraction layers and wizards, and to boot, it's incredibly fast and resource-efficient.

I've tried Gnome, KDE, and XFCE, along with CDE on Solaris, and nothing really stood out other than (a) somewhat tighter integration between applications, although nothing that can't be done with a little grease in a standalone WM, and (b) the ease of setting up otherwise complicated things, like CUPS printers. I should mention that none of my pet applications are married to Gnome or KDE libraries.

For those who do find desktop environments indispensable, what features make it worth the bloat and restriction?

This HP engineer, Bill Buzbee, designed and built a whole computer using a CPU of his own design consisting of 70s-80s era VLSI logic chips wire wrapped together. What's more he wrote an assembler and linker, ported a C compiler and Minix OS and has hooked the computer to the internet. Amazing.

IMAP clients suggestions? (1 reply)

I'm looking for a good imap client on linux that will let me get a hang of how imap works. I have just tried using imap in evolution and wasn't impressed.

Google has just added imap support to gmail and google/apps mail accounts. I like the idea of being to synchronize my local hierarchy of mail with the online version. Evolution is my current email client and has 6 years of mail stashed away in a complex hierarchy. My google/apps account is only a year old (when I finally got fed up of running spam filters on my own server) and all my recent mail is duplicated there but with only superficial tagging. I don't yet know enough about imap to synchronize my mail properly and evolution's documentation is terrible

I have been considering abandoning evolution for years now --- I really don't like the way it splits mail up to Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash, etc. --- it really messes up mail threading.

Everything I know about imap I have gained in the last two hours, the last hour of which was spent in fruitless googling. I would welcome any help I could get.

Back in April when we launched the new site, I created an Info & News module for Phorum (you see it in action on the main page). It's been working satisfactorily for a while now, so I'm going to go ahead and post it for download.

Description: This module adds side-by-side panels at the top of the index page for site information and news. The settings allow selection of the forum to source news from and modification of the info box.

To Do: I'd really like to be able to limit news articles to the first post in a thread (the parent topic), so that people can reply in the news forum. I'd also like to have the info section read BBcode instead of HTML. Both should be fairly easy to implement, but I don't actually know PHP...

Here's a question for all you Arch guru's out there..

I need to build the enterprise branch of KDEPIM under arch.. but I only have an SVN checkout of that branch which doesn't contain all the automake'd Makefiles or configure scripts etc, which are nicely packaged in ftp tarball for kdepim-3.5.7-2 from maintainer Tobias (tpowa).

I've already done the "abs", and created /var/abs/local/kdepim, extracted the source, then merged enterprise source over top.

So question is - for KDE packages, how do I re-generate a buildable source tree (without manually editing all Makefiles for new source files)?
